To understand Voxels, it’s important to know a little about the metaverse first. The metaverse is a virtual reality concept where participants, represented by avatars, can interact with each other in an immersive manner. Real-world activities like buying real estate, social interactions, and meetings can take place in a metaverse. However, the most widespread use case of metaverse platforms is gaming.
These platforms work foundationally on blockchain technology, offering a decentralized environment for its participants. Moreover, smart contracts can facilitate transactions in a metaverse, creating automated experiences.
Among the rising metaverse platforms, a few have gained mainstream fame already. Voxels is one of them and is counted as a notable metaverse. In this blog, we will explore everything about this platform: from its inception to its significance today in the metaverse and web3 space!
What Is The Cryptovoxels Metaverse?
Founded in 2018 by Ben Nolan, it is a metaverse game built on the Ethereum blockchain. The platform enabled users to purchase virtual real estate within the metaverse and build their homes or shops via customized avatars.
Initially, only a secret beta key of Voxels was launched, with land sales available for only a selected few. Eventually, on June 18, 2018, the Voxels metaverse and its virtual land parcels were made available to everyone through the OpenSea marketplace.
The primary virtual city in the game is called Origin City, where anyone with an Ethereum wallet can buy land parcels. The main features are the blocks, which are, in fact, called ‘voxels.’ Parcel holders can use these blocks to build structures and customize them accordingly.
In 2022, the Cryptovoxels metaverse was rebranded as Voxels. The original features were retained and additionally new mini-games, stories, and themed islands were added.
How is Voxels Unique?
Voxels focuses exclusively on virtual land. The core notion of Voxels corresponds to the idea of digital land ownership and development before everything else, making it a distinctive metaverse.
For instance, the Voxels metaverse consists of large virtual islands, and Origin City is the largest among them. At the same time, buying and developing land in the game is as simple as it can get. The platform provides all minute details about the land, including its bidding prices.
The platform has a special feature called Voxels Spaces, which refers to pieces of land accessible only by their holders. But a simple URL address of the Space sent by the holder to anyone can make it accessible to them too.
The Voxels Token
The original Voxels token was known as $COLR, which users could utilize to buy black and white land parcels in the metaverse. $COLR tokens, which could be purchased in Uniswap, were used to induce color and images into the blocks (voxels). Unfortunately, this token was discontinued in 2020, and developers provided token holders an option to convert their $COLR tokens back to ETH.
The sole reason to stop $COLR was because its usage was adding color to the voxels. Gradually, parcel owners could add color to their blocks freely.
On the other hand, Voxels also has a token called the Cryptovoxels Parcel (CVPA), which is an ERC-20 or NFT token representative of a piece of virtual land. Thus, buying CVPA directly makes one an NFT owner as well as a landowner. CVPA tokens can be bought directly on the OpenSea platform.
The Significance of Voxels In The Future of Web3
Voxels could assume an important role in the future of web3 with its non-fungible token-based (NFT) economy. Since these NFTs representing virtual land form the basis for this platform, the metaverse could assume a focal role for those willing to invest heavily in virtual real–estate or launch NFTs. Moreover, both brands and individuals can leverage the metaverse platform to make their own ecosystem and derive its benefits.
The Voxels community, comprising software developers, artists, designers, and other stakeholders, could use their expertise and collectively help steer the future of web3.
Summing Up
Voxels is spearheading a sustainability initiative through a partnership, aiming to mitigate the effects of climate change. Such environmental exercises are bound to positively influence its position in the world of web3 in the future.
Currently, the platform enjoys the participation of thousands of users who flock to it for its many features and usages. As the world of metaverses and web3 matures, Voxels may create its own niche in the sector. Meanwhile, it has already become an artist’s delight with interactive capabilities engaging their work.
